Default New Router on Ebay, any Experience?

I tried googling for an answer but got nowhere. So I figured I'd try this forum.

I have had Vonage as my phone service for about 3 years. I also have a wireless router which got toasted about a year ago after a power surge. It still works, but I cannot access the router from the browser to make it secure, so I have been looking to replace it.

I just bought a Linksys WRT54GP2 router on Ebay for $30 shipped. These are $100 new, so I could not justify apying for a new one when I did not really need it. $30 was worth the gamble.

Here's the problem, the MAC address on the router is attached to someone else's Vonage account so it won't work with mine. Vonage will not budge on this. How can I work around this?

The Ebay seller is huge so I am probably SOL getting any help or information from him.

Can this thing become workable for me?

I don't know about that particular model (and haven't searched) but I know some linksys routers can be flashed to a linux firmware which I believe has mac-changing capability.

Someone else on here could give more info on the firmware upgrade...all my routers are 'nix boxes. Never owned a linksys (although I've been known to pwn one here or there)

Every linksys router I've owned has had the ability to change their WAN MAC. Check your manual.

You should make sure it spells something cool when you make-up the new one.

Don't I need to change it to the same MAC address of my previous Router?

Why gamble when you can get this router for $10 after the $35 mail in rebate. Use google check out to save $20.

I liked the idea of one piece of equipment versus two.

Thanks for the deal though. I will be on this for a backup at the very least....

[/ QUOTE ]I assumed Vonage could change YOUR account to a new MAC address. (They probably have ever had a customer replace his router.) They just couldn't change the other guy's account, which contained your MAC.

But, yes, if you want be all boring about it (and save a call to Vonage) just change your new router to your old router's MAC.

Vonage offers no help. Their solution is to buy another router, which they must get a piece of.

I tried what you suggested but I can't access the router through the usual way. The previous owner must have changed the default user name or password. I got this message;

You try the Linksys defaults
User: blank
Password: admin

Otherwise I'd surf to find a way to reload factory defaults.
