If your hand has a reasonable chance of winning, when all the cards are out, your hand has showdown value.

if you raise 89 preflop otb and the flop is 28Kr, many people advocate that you check behind instead of cbet because your hand has showdown value. betting will mostly get you called by pairs better than yours, causing you to be less likely to win at showdown. thus ruining your showdown value.
