Default Connecting to a remote location (home computer)

So I'm off to the relatives for the holiday's and will bring my work laptop w/ me. I really don't want to install poker software on my work laptop and thought I could connect to my home computer to play. I have a home router and will be going through one at my mom's. Any ideas here?

Upload speeds will be your biggest problem. If you're jut playing poker then you won't need a real fast connection. If both the PCs have XP Professional you can ue remote desktop. All you have to do is enter the IP address.

Incorrect. Most likely he has a router, in that case he will have to forward ports, etc.

Just use Logmein. It's so easy and it takes 2 seconds. Speeds are amazing.

That was a generalized statement. Jeez. Why would I bother giving him all the relevant information about remote desktop in XP Professional if he doesn't even have it?

I wouldn't have either. Just much much easier to use something like logmein, etc.

Please do not do it. Enabling access to your computer from the Internet is pretty dangerous thing to do, and unless you understand network security, just forget about this. You PC WILL be attacked, and if there is a weak spot in your network configuration, it is a good chance it will be exploited.

this is the beauty of logmein. the only way it will open a security hole is if someone knows your login details to logmein.

All,

LogMeIn is quick, easy, fast, FREE, and SECURE. It is perfect for exactly what OP is trying to do. So much so that anything else barely warrants discussion.

Are there risks? Sure. But, they are about the same as having your computer simply connected to the internet in the first place.
