Good Fellas (the movie)
I just read some interesting things about this movie that I hadnt thought about previously. Often, good directors like MS include alot of details that go overlooked. One of things I read mentioned the scene where Robert Deniro starts strangling Morrie because he hasnt paid him his money and Ray Liotta starts laughing loudly. This was a subtle detail that shows that while saner than the Tommy/Jimmy, Henry is still somewhat of a sociopath. The other thing they mentioned was the important scene where Liotta violently beats the guy across the street who tried to rape Karen. While he wasnt nessecarily prone to violence, he wasnt afraid to use it.
In real life, Jimmy Burke(Conway) is insanely more psychopathic than portrayed in the movie. Supposibley he killed over 50 people and would kill the children and family members of those who crossed him. Tommy was actually killed by Paulie because he tried to rape Karen (Paulie was having an affair w/ Karen). John Gotti was the one who ordered the hit on Tommy, and Tommy was buried under Gotti's house(along w/ several others). Henry Hill was drugged in a bar last year, and then was filmed being sodomized in the woods by two men. I think he is trying to sell the video or something. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Hill_%28mobster%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_fellas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_DeSimone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Conway |

Re: Good Fellas (the movie)
Ray Liotta is also one of those actors whose career doesnt seem to have been as good as it could have been. I liked him in every movie Ive seen.

Re: Good Fellas (the movie)
I can't think of any excellent roles he has had since Goodfellas. He doesn't seem very dynamic. I see him playing a socio/psychopath, not much else. Maybe I'm wrong. But the movies I do remember him in he was excellent

Re: Good Fellas (the movie)
I suppose he wasn't a psychopath in Field of Dreams, but that wasn't exactly a demanding role IMO

Re: Good Fellas (the movie)
I was actually going to mention DeNiro in my post but didn't think it was fair to compare Liotta to someone like DeNiro. DeNiro has played the psycho/socio gangster many times - casino, goodfellas, etc, as well as your straight up socio - taxi driver and such. But look at some of his other movies - his range is pretty wide.

Re: Good Fellas (the movie)
Deniro psycho/socio/introverted character roles:
Good Fellas, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, Fan, Casino, Heat, Ronin, Mean Streets, God Father, The Deer Hunter, King of Comedy, Raging Bull, The Untouchables, 15 Minutes, Great Expectations, Jackie Brown. He has a few comedys thrown in there as he started getting older, but so does Liotta. Regardless, I dont think dynamic really matters. I think Liotta could have had some really great performances if he got to star in a Kubrick film, or someone who wasnt afriad to use violence/create very dark characters like Scorcese. Oh well... |
