But, I dont really know much about UEFA or soccer in general, except that soccer fans are insane. |

Re: amazing celtic fans video
um
[ QUOTE ] Before the first leg of the 2002/2003 UEFA Cup tie between Celtic and Liverpool at Celtic Park in Glasgow, all the fans were led in the singing of "You'll Never Walk Alone" by Gerry & The Pacemakers frontman Gerry Marsden, who became entangled in his microphone lead. Marsden was to do the same at the return leg at Anfield, but was unable due to a scheduling conflict. Another memorable night during which a rendition of the song was sung was Ian Rush's testimonial at Anfield in 1994. [/ QUOTE ] That doesn't give the history at all. I have a cd that is just a recording from the KOP in the early seventies and they sing the song on it. I don't know about Celtic but I think the story with that song at Liverpool is from the late 50s or early 60s. Basically, they used to play this and other songs before matches. As the story goes, one day the system messed up (during this song I believe) and so fans just started singing it before the match and it caught on. BTW, the slogan "You'll Never Walk Alone" is on the Shankly gates that were put in at Anfield in 1982. It has nothing whatsoever to do with either of the major tragedies that the club has faced. They do use the slogan referencing them (I believe that the Hillsboro memorial says "They'll Never Walk Alone"), but Liverpool fans tend to use that line a lot. |

Re: amazing celtic fans video
I'm an Alabamian transplanted to Scotland.
Went to my first ever European football match last night...Celtc v. Benfica (Celtic win 3-0 w/o the services of some of the star players..yay!) It was quite an experience when the entire stadium broke out into "You'll Never Walk Alone". And I might add this occurred SEVERAL times before, during, and after the match. As we are moving back to the States in a few weeks, I can't wait to take my hubby to a Saints game and rock it in the dome! |
