Default Proposition: Rick Rubin is the greatest producer ever

Yes, even moreso than George Martin.

Rubin has produced seminal works. From making poor artists good (Jay-Z - 99 Problems), to making good artists famous and excellent (Beastie Boys - Licensed To Ill) to making excellent artists legendary (Cash - American Recordings I-V), this guy has seen it all from AC/DC to Saul Williams and stopoffs along Timberlake and Neil Diamond.

Wiki Article

I contend that there is no greater record producer who has ever worked, nor is there likely to be ever who could match the prolific _ongoing_ career that Rubin has. The scale, range and talent of Rubin's work floors me each time I stop to think about it.

Discuss.

You forgot about Dr.Dre and The RZA

any artist or cd that dre touches becomes awesome.

Dre and RZA are great, yes, but they don't have nearly the range that Rubin has. The man can produce greatness in any genre. I have a hard time believing that Dre could've made better albums with Johnny Cash than Rubin did (although I'd like to listen to whatever they came up with).

Meh I did actually read it all, and while I don't disagree with you that Rubin is an excellent producer (maybe even the best, TBH my knowledge in the field of music producers is quite limited, what about some of the old 50s/60s producers who wrote all the songs for everyone?), but to say anything is better than anything to do with The Beatles to me is blasphemy and thus my "I stopped reading here" in almost silent protest. That made sense in my head.

I didn't realize how many albums he produced. That's a pretty damn impressive discography.

SOAD's 2005 albums were probably my favorite albums of that year. But then he also does Dixie Chicks, Timberlake, Slayer, Neil Diamond. That range is incredible. Most producers stick to a narrow range of genres. But he doesn't.

I don't really pay attention to record producers to, but Rubin's diversity and excellence seems unparalleled.

One night I was going to a GnR show at the Hard Rock in LV and as we walked past him my drunk loudmouth buddy shouts "HOLY [censored] RICK [censored] RUBIN", WASSUP! He laughed, shook our hands, and we chatted briefly. Yeah okay that story sucks, but it's all I got.
