Default What does the future hold for the Orioles?

The continued demise of the Baltimore franchise is troubling, and what do they have to look forward to?
The Yankees and Sox spend money. The Jays are going to be digging deeper again next year, and the Rays have some young talent. Add to this the fact they now compete with the Nationals in their traditional market area. Finishing last in the AL east next year is very likely for the O's.

If you were the owner, what directions would you take? What is the best that Baltimore can expect in the short-term (2 years) or long-term (4-6) years?

It seems like in the AL east, you either ante up big time with $$$ for players, or roll-over and die quickly.

Any thoughts

Didn't somebody make this post last year? Or was it three years ago? Five years ago? Eight years ago?

the orioles found a third option: offer big contracts, watch as the players they really want (except tejada) don't accept because of the management's awful reputation, then roll over and die.

Bedard is one of the top young pitchers in the game (and a lefty to boot).

Markakis has exploded in the 2nd half.

Miggy/B-Rob are a very solid middle infield both offensively and defensively.

Chris Ray has had a good year as closer.

Cabrera/Loewen/Penn all have some promise as young starters, especially if Mazzone can mold them a little.

So it's not as if they have nothing going for them at this point, but I think as long as Angelos is running the team there is no way that they can be competitive.

Angelos is pretty stupid, that's for sure.

Most teams would kill to have the middle infield that Baltimore does - they have the best free agent signing in recent history at shortstop and a quasi-sleeper pick at second base who has finally lived up to (and exceeded) his expectations.

It's just too bad that every other single position besides two OF slots and catcher are manned by someone well below-average and likely absurdly overpaid.

2005 Motto:

Step 1: Fire the only manager who had the Orioles in first place for a long time.

Step 2:

Step 3: Profit

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOPS

Oh well, then Yanks are happy to have him back.
