Did I get screwed by this match play?
I'm sure I did. But just checking. Vegas strip casino middle of last week. Wife signed up for a Player's card and got a free gift from the gift shop (deck of cards), and a coupon book.
In the book was a $5 matchplay coupon for blackjack. Wife and I go to an open seat at a $5 min. BJ table. I put down a $5 bill and the coupon. I win the hand, the dealer puts down two $5 chips and takes the coupon and leaves the $5 bill there. I ask where the other chip is. He calls the pit boss or manager over to explain it to me. I say, I made a $10 bet, where is my $20, there's only $15. He says, we have to take the coupon so you don't re-use it. I say, then leave me a $5 chip. He says it doesn't work that way. In July I did a $10 matchplay on roulette at a casino downtown. I put a $10 bill and the coupon on black. Black came up, and the dealer(?), marble dropper, whatever he is called, took the $10 bill and the coupon and paid off the bet with 8 $5 chips. Which is correct? Either I've never understood matchplay bets correctly, or I got screwed with the BJ bet. |

You made a $10 blackjack bet ($5 of your own plus the coupon) and got paid $10 when you won. I don't see how you got screwed.

He made a 10 dollar blackjack bet and ended up with FIFTEEN DOLLARS TOTAL when he won. That is how he got screwed.

He isn't getting screwed if that is how the coupons work at this particular casino.

Re: Did I get screwed by this match play?
I've mentioned this to a bunch of people now and it seems like it depends on the way the coupon works. It could be either way. In this case it seems like the coupon acts like a loan and if you win they take the loan back. They're not letting you keep the money, the casino is just loaning you the money to bet.

Never heard of a coupon working as a "loan" before. Seems pretty lame.

Never heard of a coupon working as a "loan" before. Seems pretty lame. [/ QUOTE ] many matchplays work exactly like this afaik, just not described in such explicit terms. this is why when people sell MP coupons on ebay, they usually get slightly less than half of its face value for it, because that is the net EV of the piece of paper. one slight perk of using blackjack matchplays is that sometimes you will be able to double down for the face value of the matchplay in addition to your own bet, essentially "tripling down" your original cash investment when you already have a +EV situation. |
