Basic Cable.
Law Student. I can only watch like an hour or two at night a few times a week, then some on weekends. Should I go with Netflix for movies, or just Tivo shows (Lost, Nip Tuck, etc.)? Don't want to pay for both. |

Sounds like you won't get your money's worth out of netflix. DVR easy.

Yeah, if you're really only watching about 4-6 hours a week, then its easily DVR. Decide which programs are worth watching, set up a "Season Pass" or the equivalent, and go to town.
Besides, if you decide on something like Netflix, you'll get addicted to Lost/Deadwood/Entourage, not be able to wait to get shipped the next disc, and then run out to Blockbuster and spend money renting anyways. |

Just so you know, Netflix's basic 1 at a time is $7/mo.

Go for the Netflix. If you've only got basic cable, it doesn't seem like a DVR would be worth it. Just watch whatever shows you want to watch when they air, and toss in a DVD if there is nothing on.

My vote is for a DVR. I've had one for a year now. Once you adjust your viewing patterns you watch more high quality stuff and never see any adverts. Great!

The answer is DVR by a mile, best invention of the past 5 years.

I've had both. Currently on netflix, getting ready to cancel it. DVR wins by a mile.

Throwing out some more possibilities...
Blockbuster.com is nice. You get 1 free rental every week from inside the store also, huge bonus. MythTV if you have a spare computer or want to make a one-time payment. It's a DVR that you build yourself and don't have to pay a monthly fee. |
