Laptop + Monitor doesn't work (I SUCK)

Hi guys, bought some bottom of the range laptop the other day to take back to college with me as I threw out my last horrendously old one when I came home for summer. I tried connecting an additional monitor to it and it wont work properly.

The cursor appears on the second monitor but other than that the screen is black, when started in safe mode the second monitor works but displays the same picture as the laptop.

Am I doing something wrong here? Or is it that I need a graphics card and if so which?

(It says it has "Integrated SiS661GX Graphics with up to 64MB memory" but I'm a computer cripple and have no clue what this means.)

Any replies would be great and remember I'm stoooooopid so imagine you are explaining it to a monkey.
