Default Why do bluffers play limit?

I play with one guy regularly who is a 'pro'. He built his bankroll thru poker, but he is really bad and guaranteed busto (apparently his roll was > 500k at one point).

I play lim hold em with him, and his big leak is that he is constantly trying to push people off hands. He will auto fire 3 barrels once he decides to fire the first, unless you show the ability to repeatedly call him down very light over numerous hands. He takes shots at every scare card, bluff raises, c/r bluffs etc. He also talks a lot, and it seems clear that he thinks he can just outplay other people. I dont get why someone with his attitude would play limit rather than no limit (he does play some no limit at high stakes, so it isnt like he doesnt know the game).

Here's one answer. If bluffing is your big leak (I'm speaking from a bit of experience here...) then limit is WAY cheaper. I make a couple of stupid bluffs in limit and I lose 4 or 5 bets. I make a couple of stupid bluffs in limit, I lose everything.

I use to have a tendency like your friend, that if I decided to bluff, I was going to carry it out no matter what (WPT calls this 'heart' when its successful) but each attempt requires more and more money. Even if you successfully bluff a couple of times, you eventually bluff off your money.

My bluffing habits is one of the biggest reasons I've moved to limit.

How sure are you that this is in fact a 'leak' in his game?

Why do limit players bluff? Because it adds to our earn.

I highly doubt this statement.

I opened this thread and was disappointed, but hey, let's take a shot at this...

You highly doubt that bluffing adds to a limit player's earn?

Or do you "highly doubt" that POORLY PLAYED bluffs add to our earn?

In the first case, I would believe you're either a NL player, or you simply don't understand the game enough. Simple ABC, straight-forward, no-bluff-at-all poker is enough to beat the worst compteition.

In order to maximize your earn, you obviously need to learn which players you can force to lay down hands that are superior to yours. You can't just do this willy-nilly, but come on, I thought most people understood this concept.

Speaking strictly for myself, the one poker book I've read in the past two years that has contributed the most to my already-positive bottom line is Matt Lessinger's Book of Bluffs.

I bluffed successfully once in the Foxwoods $2/4. (Yeah, only once.) If you can bluff in that game, ever, you can bluff in any game. Just not very often.

I'm surprised that this is even a discussion. Of course you can bluff a limit game. It's just not a good idea if you have a bunch of calling stations. But, if you're at a table where people are playing weak, it can be +EV.

That's the whole thing about adjusting your play to the texture of the game - a point which seems to be missed on about half the readership of this board.
