Why can\'t we talk about Intelligence?
You NEVER hear a politician or pundit discuss the role of intelligence in daily life, or the massive effect that intelligence has on an individual's chances for financial success or socially undesirable bahavior. Why?

Re: Why can\'t we talk about Intelligence?
Easy. A soon as the subject comes up, the relative success of minorities will come up. And we can't have that because the first sitting pol to suggest that there might be some difference in intelligence among any groups for any reason will be burned at the stake.

Because most politicians aren't that smart and they don't want the secret out.

[/ QUOTE ] While this may be true, I think there is more to it. There are plenty of dumb white people out there, and they get fed the same crap as minority underachievers- go to school, work hard blah blah blah. Almost never is it acknowledged that dumb people usually will not achieve much regardless of how hard they work, and that the psychological effects of this are huge. |

Re: Why can\'t we talk about Intelligence?
It is politically incorrect to suggest that people are primarily responsible for their own lot in life. If you aren't successful it is because you were discriminated against on the basis of religion, sex, race or national origin or you have ADD or an untreated learning disability, or your mom didn't breastfeed you, or your dad didn't hug you enough, or you were too heavily influenced by TV, or any other reason that will provide you with an excuse to not take responsibility for your own actions or inactions or poor genetic makeup.

Re: Why can\'t we talk about Intelligence?
Four reasons: (1) no one is really sure what "intelligence" is; (2) conventionally (and controversially) measured, it tends to be unimproveable; (3) it has elitist and racist connotations that your subjects tend to avoid; and (4) other than predicting general trajectories, it doesn't play much role in daily life. People don't need much "intelligence" to go to get through their daily cycle of work, entertainment and sleep.
Politicians and pundits are talking to a society in which the vast majority are more knowlegeable, creative, curious and capable of solving problems than politicians and pundits need or want them to be. They seek followers, not critics. |

[/ QUOTE ] Because the answer is obvious and been done before. Read the post before mine, which is as good a summary as any. Nice end to the discussion. |
