"I'm definitely interest in the technical aspect of the job, and since I plan on studying the design of systems to do whatever it your company does, but I'd also just like to learn what it's like to work on a software project in a real world environment, as you meet deliverables or in development or support a live product while trying to compete with cyclical releases."

Many jobs have a minimum service time before they really consider promotions. Ask what it is. Ask your manager what he or she would like to see from you over your first X months. Determine whether you consider that worthwhile. If so, do that.
