Planning for the WSOP
Sorry for the cross-post. I just realized it made more sense to post this here:
I have a friend that recently won an on-line qualifier for the WSOP and he has asked me to help him train for it since this will be his first major live tournament in a casino. Are there any books, articles or 2+2 posts that you can recommend? Some of the books we already have are: Tournament Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky Harrington on Hold 'em 1 & 2 Zen and the Art of Poker by Larry Phillips The Tao of Poker by Larry W. Phillips The Psychology of Poker by Alan N. Schoonmaker Thanks |

Re: Planning for the WSOP
I totally agree with the recommended books. I don't think you need (or will have time) to add anything else.
I don't know how far you live from a casino, but if you can, make a few trips to some smaller tournaments to get used to the feel of the environment, and get used to handling and counting out the chips. Good luck to you and your buddy for the WSOP. |

And Chris Moneymaker's book to help seperate the notions of "good playing" and suck-outs. I don't mean that in a mean way, but some people I know consider the suck-outs "good-playing" and vice versa.

Re: Planning for the WSOP
ive read HOH I & II and recently got kill phil in preparation for WSOP.
the strategy in kill phill is so drastically different thatn HOH i had to stop reading it. it was messing w/ my game. i dont play that type of poker and i am not that aggressive of a player. ive read the review on 2+2 so i dont question the book's merit but for me, it felt like a huge step back in my tourney ability. instead i decided to reread HOH I & II again. not only is it a great book, it blends well w/ my playing style which is just as important. and OP, dont pick too many books. realistically, how many books can one person properly digest in 2 1/2 months? prioritize them and go from there. bwana |

Re: Planning for the WSOP
It all depends on if your friend needs more "book" skills or just needs to become more confident playing live.
Kill Phil wouldn't hurt. I find a good mix of HOH for the early rounds and KP for later rounds to be pretty optimal for my style of play. For live experience, as the poster above stated, go to a nearby casino, or if there isn't one nearby, most states have those free National Pub Poker League tournaments. I would rate the level of play at those as a step above a free-roll (some of those players really do take the game seriously) and more like a $5 online MTT. If anything, it would give your friend practice at handling a live environment. Stylite |
