The US version of this show I think is more watchable, but I like the Japanese idea. (If you haven't seen the US version, they take clips from the Japan version and edit out the whole Takeshi story and it's basically a clip show with all the voices crudely (on purpose) dubbed in.)

I've only ever seen MXC- what does the Japanesse version do differently? what is the story?

I've only read about it, but it's something a group of people (contestants) are "forced" to do events by the ruler of the castle, those who make it past the events have to shoot at the escaping Takeshi with water/laser guns. If they hit him, the winner gets a million yen. ($7000 back then). The guy who made it wanted it to be a kind of real life Mario game.
