Default Recommend a Linux/UNIX distribution

I'm looking for a distribution with good performance and windows emulation, so I guess there aren't many criteria. I wouldn't be using it as much as a workstation and definitely not as a server. Ease of installation is a plus, and so are free distributions. I've been looking at FreeBSD and Debian, but the former seems a little too workstation oriented. Any input is appreciated.

Ubuntu is easily one of the most user-friendly Distros out there. They also have an amazing user community that answers almost every question you have. If you just want to try it out I would recommend downloading the LiveCD option which just boots from the CD and runs the OS off of it. Nothing is really installed.

Edit: For Windows stuff you can install WINE which allows you to run most Windows apps.

I've been using Ubuntu for about 3 months on my laptop now and a lot of the computers I use at school have kubuntu front ends. I have almost no complaints and it has been much easier to install/use than any other linux distro I've tried in the past (to be fair however all the other linux ditros I have used have been much older).

Thanks for the reference to Ubuntu. Does anyone here use the amd64 build on Athlong64 architecture? Just wondering if I should opt for that or the i386 version.

Ubuntu. Standard.

Get VMWare for Windows emulation.
