Default The biggest pot of my life, and apparently I was waaaay behind

1000 PL Omaha Hi/Lo, nine-handed

UTG - $1250
Hero - $1000
CO - $1000
Button - covers

Hero is MP1 with A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].

UTG limps, ..., Hero limps, ..., MP3 limps, CO raises pot to $65, Button cold-calls, ..., BB calls, UTG calls, Hero reraises pot to $405, MP3 folds, CO calls, Button calls, BB folds, UTG calls.

($1700) 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

UTG checks, Hero pushes for $595, CO calls all-in, Button calls, UTG pushes for $850, Button calls.

UTG has A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (nut low draw, pair of 5's)
Hero has A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (no low draw, pair of aces, pair of 5's)
CO has A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 4[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (second nut low draw, pair of 2's, double gutted straight draw)
Button has J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (pair of 8's, no draw, LOL)

($4500) 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

($4500) 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

Main pot: $4000
Side pot: $500

Results:

UTG wins the low half of the $500 side pot with A-3 nut low.
Button wins the high half of the $500 side pot with trip 8's.

UTG wins the low half of the $4000 main pot with A-4 nut low.
CO wins the high half of the $4000 main pot with a 4-to-8 straight.

Hero gets nothing.

Interesting lessons learned:
(warning -- strategy)

My preflop strategy with AAxx hands is to generally raise regardless if the xx includes a 2 or 3 and sometimes even if not, as long as there is some good low possibility (e.g. AA46ds or AA45s), but otherwise to just limp and repot hard if someone raises behind me, if I can get most of my stack in preflop. Because I thought any AAxx hand is a favorite. BUT... apparently I was just 10% preflop against these three opponents (twodimes)!

And on the flop, I thought with the $1700 pot and less than $600 behind, I was easily committed. But holy [censored], get this -- I had only 4% equity on the flop (twodimes)! This is the most extreme example I have ever seen of the Omaha deception... I had the best "made" high hand on the flop but it was completely meaningless.

So I guess this teaches me that bare AAxx hands are just complete crap in omaha hi/lo, even so bad as to just fold them preflop and not even go for the limp-and-reraise-preflop-or-fold-most-flops route.

W(a^25)y too long to read.

(I had lots of As, but it stretched the screen, and I know better than to enrage the wrathful Gild.

Check me if I'm wrong, but UTG didn't have the nut low draw.

He had a made nut low (A2358)

Whoops, you're right. Can't edit the post anymore.

Also, knowing that a low was almost definitely out there and I was getting free-rolled, would you still put your remaining $600 in on that flop with a pot of $1700?

there is a o8 forum that will answer all of this for you, but if you are too lazy to go in there let me just tell u this as it seems you are lacking huge PLO8 fundamentals. if you are only going to play for half the pot (i.e. the high), your half better be rock solid and your hand AA/5x is far from it. you got faked out into thinking your high and/or low was good and both were sh*t.

as far as AA strategy goes, if you have a naked AA your best is to play it like any other pair and hope to flop a set and with AA you are really hoping for a set over set especially since people would expect you to raise AA preflop.

GIS for large pot...

If this is how PLO8 1k is played, I can't wait to make it there. Unless of course those other 3 player were colluding against you, in that case I'm scared . Not implying anything, just that I've heard O8 is the easiest game to do it in.
