Default Is all Florida poker an atrociously -EV play?

I'm passing through greater Maimi, searched through this forum, and it sounds like all metro-miami poker is awful?

As I understand it, the highest limit anywhere by law is $2, and the sit'n'go options offer a very fast blind structure with a 20% rake plus tips? Are there other options that I did not see in the forum?

Does the serious poker community of FL have a bunch of home/private games to avoid this mess, or do you suck it up and play 1/2 and hope to make enough to cover tips and the rake?

(I live in a no-poker state, and I think we may be in a better situation than FL, if only because it's not too hard to find a game on the weekends, and even if you tip the host on a winning night, it's still a lower rake than any casino would offer. Plus, if you have a bad night, you can always ease the pain with cow-tipping.)

The legislation that allows for poker in the state seems to be designed to dissuade professionals from playing. The only +EV games seem to be the large MTTs at the Hard Rock casinos, especially the "deep-stack" one they run in Tampa, and perhaps the larger SNGs. The structures may be brisk, even for these high-dollar events, but players in FL aren't nearly as sharp as players in real casinos, as far as I can tell.

Oh, and the bad play and curious structure of a $2/$2HE game often makes the game +EV, but high variance and not enough income to live off of. It's decent recreation, but does not resemble the poker played in Vegas or AC -- more like a play money game online.

This same topic on live Florida poker has been coming up every week in this forum for years.

Florida poker is a dog with fleas. It sucks. Of course it is -EV. The legislation in FL doesn'teven understand their own idiotic low limit laws.

I don't think the 1/2 and 2/2 games are -EV for a good player who can handily calculate odds on the fly, keep from tilting from constant bad beats and be rather tight with dealer tips. But the margin you're working with given the ridiculous rake wouldn't be worth the work you would have to put into it.

These games are strictly for entertainment purposes only, which is exactly what the legislation intended. I think the only reason poker was allowed in the first place 10 years ago was an attempt to give the dying parimutuel industry a shot in the arm. I think there was an express intent to not make it a game that would attract sharks.

If you just have to play some B&M poker while you're here, go to Dania Jai Alai and play Double Flop Holdem. It's the only reason I'll venture out to the B&Ms here for a poker game.

There are some possible changes in the rules governing Florida poker. These bill under consideration in committees in the Florida House and Senate.

CS/CB 752
CS/CB 1192
CS/CB 216
HB 1377

Bills raising the bet limit to 5 or 10 dollars. Possibly allowing a $100 buy-in no limit game. High stakes tournaments. Expanded hours. High hand jackpots. Etc.

If a bill is tabled in committee, that usually means it's dead. So that doesn't bode well for the high-stakes tourney bill.

For what I've heard a bill passed allowing big tourneys (10K I assume) to be played twice a year.
I've played a couple of times at the Hard Rock in Hollywood (Miami) and the 1/2 game is usually filled with people who barely know the rules. I've seen people rebuy 5 or 6 times during a short session. If they made the games 100 max NLHE I think the level of play would increase and some people may be able to make ends meet playing that game (with the current level of play I think you may be able to get 15 BB/hour)

It was discussed in committee, but nothing has passed. There usually always seems to be discussions in committee but it never gets further than that.

The current legislative session is almost over -- certainly nothing is going to get done this time around.
