I second the proposal put forth in the last line of this post by Mat Sklansky.

I'm going to reply to this thread now with my question...because I feel I am missing something.

While I agree that some threads are locked far too soon (and I said so in ATF)...Have I missed people being ridiculed in the Lounge? I have honestly never once felt as if I was being unfairly attacked (though surely i've felt disagreement of opinion, which is good!). WHen I first came to the Lounge I expected it to be a snooty area just because I figured to be one of the younger posters willing to jump in on the topics I cared about (I think I'm one of the younger...?)

So has there been in-forum Lounge hostilities that I have just been missing in my time away from the Lounge? It seems like everyone is afraid of that...

Note: I am distinguishing locked threads from what I am referring to. Locked threads aren't usually personal attacks as much as hasty moderation trying to clean up the forum.

I've sometimes been terse in my post about why I locked a thread. That's been interpreted as rude a couple times.

i killed a new poster once, just to see him die...so, maybe it has something to do with that.

The Lounge is about discussion without personal attacks. We even had a civil discussion in this thread, where I was purposely provocative.

The Lounge is awesome and it's my favorite forum on 2+2.

That's been my interpretation as well...and the main reason I love it (though the fact I can actually remember posters and their personalities helps too, OOT is too big sometimes for that).

I don't know what I feared, and while this may be the same reason some don't post things (self-conscious or afraid)...it doesn't strike me as a reason to change a winning formula.

From time to time I've thought of something I thought would make a nice thread for the Lounge. However, I've avoided making the posts as it seems that anything that isn't a PhD thesis is unwanted here.

The rule with regards to content seems overly-restrictive. Just because something isn't 50,000 words doesn't mean it can't be thought provoking or interesting, and just because someone uses twice as many words as necessary to communicate something doesn't make it more relevant or thoughtful.
