Default VISTA - most efficent firewall & antivirus

With Windows XP I used Symantec Corporate Antivirus, it rarely got in the way or slowed down my computer. I tried a bunch of anti-virus solutions over the years and they all bogged down the computer, the corporate edition seemed to have the best performance (probably because it was just an anti-virus solution without all the other miscellaneous crap they include with Nortons). For a software firewall I used Agnitum Outpost Firewall which was the best solution I ever found.

Unfortunatly my Symantec corporate license wont work on Vista, and Outpost hasn't released a Vista version yet so I don't know what I should install. Can anyone make a recommendation based on experiance?

I'm using OneCare, a MS product because I could license it on my Vista box and XP box. I don't know how good it is, but I'm fairly safe on the internets and behind a router so it isn't something I worry about a great deal.

Thanks for the feedback, but I'd feel bad if I didn't tell you that OneCare is known to be the worst option on the market, its not a robust application and missed lots of critical viruses during testing.

Additionally its wise with a hardware firewall you should always have a software firewall installed, I used Outpost because it was highly configurable down to the port level, this way I could allow some features of applications blocked, while other features of the same application would be permitted.

I think you should keep an eye on this thread with me, we might both learn something new!

I really recommend avira antivir over AVG I've tried em both.
For firewall options Im just using the one on my router and windows firewall...Also Windows Defender for spyware even tho avira handles that too

This is all on vista too

TT - My advice to my customers has always been AVG, even with Vista. I've installed AVG on many new Vista customers, as well as the new AVG anti-spyware application and I've had nothing but rave reviews. I do have to admit that on my own installation of Vista I've had trouble with the auto-update feature with AVG. I've uninstalled/reinstalled but nothing has helped. Oddly enough, but thankfully none of my customers have had this problem. I've been using AVG for years on XP and have installed in on tons of pc's for my customers and it is just plain awesome.

After all the auto-update troubles with AVG that I had, I finally installed the free version of Avast after several positive personal reviews I heard. I've got tot admit, I like it. It seems to work great, it auto-updates, it is VERy quiet and takes up almost NO system resources. I'm still an AVG man, but Avast is working well for me in a pinch.

As for firewalls....currently there are no good firewalls for Vista because of the way Microsoft locked down the kernal. The big named software firewalls like Zone Alarm no longer work with Vista, at least currently. I've been a big fan of ZA in the past and since it doesn't work with Vista I've done some research and haven't found anything else that is worth a flip in my opinion. Hopefully this will all change soon.
