Why do people think its hard to become a Hollywood Player?
Right now the only obstacle in my way of being a major hollywood player is my laziness. All you have to do is as follows:
1. Get some money 2. Learn a foriegn language in a country w/ a small independent film market 3. Do tons of research before you start 4. Find someone who is good w/ a camera, you like and trust 5. Write an awesome script that can be shot on a low budget, yet is also very marketable. 6. Make the movie, it should include nudity and violence. 7. Send the movie to the Western film festivals, if nothing bites, you sell it locally. People say stuff like "You are going to need atleast $10K for lights and microphones". Primer was shot on film (not even digital) for $7K. Whenever, anyone says anything about how much money you need, just ask them why is it that Primer was made for only $7K. That pretty much ends the debate. Here are the reasons why must wannabe film makers fail: 1. They are more intersted in technical details about the equipment then they are in the showing people that they can create a great story. These people are like kids who just want to play with the camera, they are not creative enough to be a director. 2. They cast their little brother or roomate as the lead actor. Again, these people are just like little kids who want to mess around making a film. If you are serious about making a movie, then go out and discover your own actors. At some point, Bruce Willis was flipping burgers, your job is to find the next Bruce Willis. 3. Find someone who already owns the equipment, and use their equipment, in other words, find guys I talked about in #1. Let them do technical work on your movie. Chances are they will be excited about it, and you can cut them in w/ a market share. 3A. Write out detailed storyboards and film notes so you dont have to rely heavily on the dolts in #3 to think creatively. 4. The script is garbage. If you are going to make a movie with a bad script, its going to stink. A great script is essential. 5. They waste money. Dont pay for anything, think creatively how to do something for as cheap as possible. 6. Their film is not marketable enough. The best way to break into the industry is to make marketable films, not art house films. You can always get funding for personal films once you are a hollywood player. 6A. Be smart and you can make arthouse films which are also marketable. So like I said, its really very simple. |

Because all of what you have described takes 5-10yrs to pull off successfully and then you still might fail...

Jeez fish, it's even better to write a great novel, you just get a computer and sit down and write an amazing story. I'd do it right now if I wasn't so lazy.

getting the credit deserved for a great novel is infinitely harder then getting it for a movie.
you dont even need to speak the foriegn language, it would help, but its not entirely nessecary. As for the script, if you cant come up with anything yourself, then make a stylized tribute film. |

If you truly believe it's not that hard, you're an idiot. Primer is the exception. Name 10 other movies you've seen shot on a similar budget. How many people do you think make indie movies and take them very seriously and still fail? My guess is a ton.

zzzzz.... "Name 10 other movies you've seen shot on a similar budget." There are tons of films made on larger budgets that could have easily been made for $50K, so your question is immediately flawed: most low budget films are being made by amateurs not professionals. |
