Default Bad Internet habits - does surfing ruin you for honest work?

I'm so used to killing time in my dead-end job posting on 2+2 and surfing the Internet that I find when I actually want to get stuff done I can't. Last night I wanted to research companies in a career I want to get into, write some application letters, start writing a diary or just a plan for the coming months, send emails to friends I've lost track of, and so on. Instead I spent the evening posting to the 2+2 "hot girls with short hair" thread, posting on porn forums, checking Facebook (few friends = no messages), railing FTP, and getting nothing done.

How do you discipline yourself to make good use of your time, when 2+2/Internet porn/Facebook etc give you such bad timewasting habits?

Oh yeah, and downloading films and music doesn't count as getting things done, either...

I've learned from my experience that I only get things done when I have a time constraint. If I have all day to do something, I'm going to wait until the last minute to get it done. It's worked well for me so far and I don't really plan on changing.

Question for you: Why don't you research jobs and write application letters to kill time at your dead end job?

Yes, you're right, that's what I should be doing. When I'm at work I should do "life improvement" stuff like researching and applying for jobs, and writing diaries / blogs / articles etc. I should keep off 2+2.

When I'm at home, I can spend as much time as I like on 2+2, Pirate Bay, Hypem, Facebook, messenger, porno sites etc because I got all the important stuff done earlier.

Like everybody else I need to have demarcation points so that when I'm working I'm working, and when I'm surfing I'm surfing. Without this division, your bad habits seep into your work time and stop you achieving anything.

I totally know what you mean. I woke up at 5:30am today, did yard work for 1 1/2 hours (before sun got too hot) then came into office to work and here it is 8am and still surfing 2 + 2, LOL. I'll start working in the next hour or so.
