Default China overtakes US as world\'s biggest CO2 emitter

China overtakes US as world's biggest CO2 emitter

China has overtaken the United States as the world's biggest producer of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, figures released today show.

This following comes on the heels of this announcement:

China plans to delay implementation of stricter auto emissions standards -report

China's economic planning agency is seeking to delay nationwide implementation of more stringent auto emissions standards due to fuel quality issues, even as pollution is worsening in the country, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a senior agency official.

'We don't have enough good fuel, so imposing the new rules will have to go step by step with fuel supplies,' the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) official said.

He said oil refiners cannot produce enough low-sulfur gasoline to enable the standards to be rolled out across the country by July 1.

I love it, the economic planning agency, refiners not having enough capicity, etc. .

Remember Kyoto protocol doesn't apply to China or India. How crazy is that? UN supporters take note.

If Kyotol and Kyoto are the same thing in your post, China and India have both at least ratified it...Whereas the United States has made no effort at all in this regard.

Fixed my typo, thanks. The U.S. would ratify it too if it was exempt from the emission reduction targets. India and China are exempt from them. It's absolutely amazing to me that supporters can ignore this simple fact.

Kyoto Protocol

As of December 2006, a total of 169 countries and other governmental entities have ratified the agreement (representing over 61.6% of emissions from Annex I countries).[2][3] Notable exceptions include the United States and Australia. Other countries, like India and China, which have ratified the protocol, are not required to reduce carbon emissions under the present agreement.

God damned commies. USA is supposed to be no. 1 at everything! I strongly urges all true Amercians to turn their air conditioning up full blast and leave your cars running in the driveway even when you're not using it. With enough patriotism, those pinkos can be put in their place.

Let's reiterate the headline of this thread shall we?

China overtakes US as World's biggest CO2 emitter.

We have a treaty to reduce carbon emissions that exempts the biggest emittor and you consider that a rational policy?

We are told by Al Gore et al that human-caused global warming will lead to an irreversible catastrophe unless drastic (and economically painful)steps are taken. But then we are told that economic development is more important (at least for China, India, Brazil).

This doesn't add up.

If C02 actually is "bad" do you think that rich white people CO2 does more damage per unit than poor brown people CO2?

I think that those who oppose Kyoto on the grounds that China isn't covered are letting the perfect become the enemy of the good. The fact is, there is a ton of good that the West can do to solve global warming. China not doing their part is no excuse for the West to not do theirs.

Also, my liberal side tells me that we should bear a greater burden to cut CO2 precisely because we're wealthier and we can afford it.
