Default What is a donk bet?

Well, I actually know what it is. But why is it called that?

I read this post where the guy made a comment that the villian made a donk bet, but I thought the villian could really have a good hand and didn't want the street to be checked.

Any bet that's very poor could be called a donk bet. A lot of times minimum raises or bets are called that, because you see a lot of terrible players betting minimum to ... well, actually I'm not sure why they bet the minimum. Other terrible bets or raises would also apply. No clue what to tell you about your specific example as I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about.

i guess a donk bet is more the type of bet than a specififc bet. for instance someone floating the flop against an aggresive opp, who then raises the turn on a float/bluff may run in to the nuts and this is not really a donk bet.

A donk bet would be more like someone bluffing the river in a big pot on a dry board for a small % of the pot, or min re-raising preflop with AA with 6/7 limpers

Technically, a donk bet refers to a flop bet into the pre-flop raiser. Sometimes these bets are donkish (a weak bet with a weak holding), but other times they are indicative of a medium strength hand (top pair good kicker), or a strong hand that wants to get raised. In my experience the better the player (and the more aggressive you are), the more likely a donk bet is representative of a medium strength hand or the near nuts.
