Default NHL powerplays vs. NFL turnovers, which are more advantageous

I have an ongoing argument with my bro. I am totally convinced that a turnover in football gives much more of an advantage to the recovering team, compared to the advantage an NHL team gets by going on the powerplay.

He believes that the "turnover" may be slightly more advantageous, but its very close. Am I missing something?

nfl turnovers, and its not even close

nhl teams routinely have nights where their power play goes 0-8 or something like that and they can still win rather easily

if an nfl team has > 3 turnovers, its genereally a loss

Turnovers are worth between ~3.25-4 pts of swing value IIRC depending on field position.

That was my first thought. His argument is that the advantage of the power play isnt so much the scoring advantage, but the other team's scoring disadvantage. So a team can go 0-8 and still have a great advantage, due to the other teams 16 min disadvantage.

I guess a better question would be how many teams go 0-8 and lose?

nfl tunrovers for sure. however it's not "routine" for an 0-8 powerplay skid in one game. in fact it's rare for one team to even get 8 penalties in 1 game.

I wouldn't say for sure

We have somewher ~4 points for a NFL turnover....does that increase a team's winshare more than getting a powerplay?

It's an interesting question

I havent read that before, ty. I guess that the turnover is still more of an advantage, but it is closer than I thought.
