LA Times rips U-Haul a new one
3 part series on how effed up this company apparently is. You may have to register, but they won't spam you.
That trailer sway is scary stuff. As someone who's been through a blow-out rollover I never want to risk something like that again. Bottom line: make sure your trailer is much smaller than your car, and probably avoid U-haul altogether. "They set standards and guidelines that, in reality, they knew were not happening," he said. "All these trucks were breaking down the day after they were rented, and after they said maintenance had been performed." Anyone have any U-Haul horror stories? |

Re: LA Times rips U-Haul a new one
Everyone I know who has ever used U-Haul has had one of the following things occur:
1) Get there and they don't have the size truck requested. 2) Get there and no longer have a confirmed appointment. 3) Get there and it is a complete ghetto operation with run-down trucks and shady manager. Usually it is at least 2 of 3, IIRC. Not surprising they are sketchy about safety issues also. -Al |

Re: LA Times rips U-Haul a new one
I can confirm that it was a nightmare experience for me too. I'd tell the story if it didn't make me look like such a putz for putting up with their crap at a time when I was so desperate to get moved out of one place and into another on the right day that they had me over a barrel. Tops the list for worst customer service, deception, and rip-off. Love that they're getting some crap and sure it's ridiculously well-deserved.

I've only rented two trucks. No problems at all. Maybe the third time's the charm?

I personally have had great uhual experiences.
However for my father "1) Get there and they don't have the size truck requested." end with him basically driving a semi. |

Re: LA Times rips U-Haul a new one
U haul is shady.
The most disturbing thing about this article is that they say that U haul will let people tow WAY above their vehicle tow limit. The example they gave is that they let people tow 4,400* lbs with a CROWN VIC when Ford puts the capacity at 1500 lbs. That seems sooo negligent. Edit: 4,400lbs on anyhting but a large truck/SUV is just absurb for those who haven't towed b4... |

There was a whole thread about U-Haul horror stories on here a few months ago.

Re: LA Times rips U-Haul a new one
Kot - I've used Ryder before and thought they were great, worth the price premium.
Blue - actually most people I know had the terrible experience in CA (most in LA). I've never used U-Haul (based largely on friend's bad experiences) but have helped friends move so have seen how ghetto some of these places and trucks are. Don't see why this would be the case, but maybe U-Haul's worse in CA. -Al |
