Microphone/Speakers Q

My laptop is plugged into my stereo using the microphone plug (stereo doesnt work if plugged into speaker plug wtf?) Hasn't been an issue but now I want to try a microphone.

Why can't my stereo w/SPEAKERS plus into the SPEAKERS plus and let me use my microhpone plug, whats my play?
