Default Whatever happened to patrons of the arts?

I was thinking about this the other day. It used to be the case that painters, musicians, poets and writers didn't have to work. Instead, a wealthy arts patron would pay their expenses so the artists would be free to pour their souls into their work, creating the timeless masterpieces of culture that we have all come to love today.

I am, no doubt, destined for greatness. I can feel it in my blood, just as surely as my heart beats. However I loathe work. I am simply not suited for labor; genius comes at a cost. I am a dynasty and I am being stifled by the petty economic practicalities of modern American life. I need a patron. Fortunately, through the miracle of technology, I have found a way to seek the support I need so that I can be the next in the line that has seen the likes of Dante, Goethe, Kafka, Dostoyevsky and Hemingway.

What do you think my chances are?

Lol!!

The real genius artists live in misery and squalor which they use as inspiration. Abuse of various substances as well as mental illnesses help. If you don't already have a mental illness, I recommend playing in your cat's sandbox as I hear contracting toxoplasmosis is akin to very mild brain damage; it probably isn't serious enough to inspire genius artistry, but it's a start. Good luck in your endeavors.

FWIW, the craigslist post is pretty funny. Post any decent replies you get and the thread will probably be saved.

I'm glad you said this. Prior to it I just thought you were a horribly pretentious bastard. With that said I do agree with you.
