Default Laptop won\'t come out of sleep/hibernate

This isn't my computer so I don't have a ton of info. Basically my friend has a Gateway laptop (probably the problem) that is pretty new. If the lid gets closed and the laptop goes im guessing into hibernate when you go to turn it back in with the power button the lights come on but the computer display does not. If you do a hard shutdown/reboot it comes back. Any ideas?

On some computers you have to hit the power button (not a hard shutdown) for a computer to come out of hibernation. I you confused me when you said it comes back after a hard shutdown/reboot. Does it come back if you just tap the power button but don't hold it down? Fwiw, I think hibernate sucks, but LuckyTx will disagree.

My dell does this if the screensaver activates while the lid is closed. It isn't hibernate on my computer as I have that disabled.

The solution to my problem is a function key marked CRT/LCD. I would guess that my laptop thinks it is outputting to another monitor when I close the lid and it goes to screensaver and hitting this button switches back.
