Default handling donk bets

How do you typically handle a smallish donk bet when you whiff in the 1$-5$ buy-ins? In cash games I usually raise but this seems alot more ineffective in a tourney.

Typical situation:

blinds: 15/30 1500 stacks

I raise 3x from MP1 with AQ.. folds to unknown in bb who calls
flop comes J83
villain leads for 80

Fold. At this level any pair plays like a set to these people. Be patient and you will get paid off.

don't think this is necessarily a donk bet, as you find these half pot-size bets often as some sort of probe bets also in the higher buy ins.
i think most often you find them when villain has middle pair or sometimes also top pair with a weak kicker.
i don't think its possible to give some general advice how to treat this situation.
sometimes i reraise and try to check it down afterwards (fold to a rere-raise of course).
sometimes i like to call, which leads to a small bet on the turn which i call to and reraise strong on the river, which often wins me a nice pot, cause donks tend to fold to a river bet if they havn't hit anything.
