Default Hope you didn\'t have money in BetonSports

They fired all Costa Rica staff today and shut the doors. Other newspapers quote them as saying NETeller has suspended activity with them.

NT and FP stop activity

"The Wire Act does make it a crime to be in the gambling business and accept sports bets but it does not make it a crime to be the bettor," Rose said.

Rose said the government can't confiscate the deposits, because the bettors haven't done anything illegal. To say the bettors are as guilty as the bookies is wrong, he said.

[/ QUOTE ]

Is this statement correct? I thought it was also illegal to gamble online from the bettors perspective. Is that not the case?

Also, what does this say about neteller and does it make them someone you should not trust as they have an indirect ability to totally screw you and it appears they are willing to do so?

Utah - this is my understanding, as written, that the Wire Act outlaws running a book over phones or teh interweb, but does not outlaw betting.

This is, of course, not legal advice. I am not your lawyer and am just providing an opinion.

This doesn't make me trust Neteller any less. They know they've got a fine line to walk and they don't want to get drawn in as being a complacent part in things illegal. Better they break contact here than we lose our ability to use Neteller entirely...

[/ QUOTE ]Neteller is screwing their customers plain and simple. Why should they break contact? Did they just realize now that someone may be placing a wager through them? It is there whole reason for existing.

In your quote, Prof Rose is speaking of The Wire Act. The Wire Act is aimed at folks "in the business of" gambling, meaning the bookies, not the bettors.

No federal law bans betting. State laws may vary.

The "wire act" is a moot point. This entire mess is about hundreds of millions of dollars in Federal tax money, the Feds ARE NOT GETTING from the internet sportsbooks. Folks with BetonSports accounts are not getting money back, because BeonSports assets have leins on them and have been "frozen".
