Question about scoring a TD w/ less than 2 mins.

Wouldn't it be better to run the ball out at the 1 yard line or get tackled and take time off the clock before punching the ball into the endzone? How many times do you see a game where one team scores but leaves 1-2 mins. on the clock giving the opponent a chance to win? Now I know no NFL coach would ever do that nor tell his players to run out at the 1, but would it be +EV to do so?

I think you should do this if a FG would win the game, but you should NEVER give up a TD if thats what you need to take the lead.

Yea I agree for the most part, but look at what happened in the Eagles game today. The same thing w/ the Jets-Colts game a few weeks ago.

I'm reminded of the Patriots - Colts game a few years ago where Edgerrin James was stuffed at the goal line as time expired. One yard rushing TDs are not automatic in the NFL.

I really wish Westbrook would have stood at the goal line for 10 seconds until a Buc decided to chase after him. And then stepped into the end zone.

Edit: Normally, you should not wait, you should score the touchdown. But there was no one around Westy and he could have run some time off, which is a rare situation.

I'm assuming you mean they need to score a TD to take the lead and will lose if they don't.

I think it changes based on a few factors, most importantly:
1) What down it is
2) How good you are in the red zone
3) How much time is left on the clock
4) How many timeouts your opponent has

I want to say it was an Auburn/UGA game where, instead of letting Auburn score a touchdown from inside the 10, then get the ball back and try to score back, UGA played real defense and Auburn ended up kicking a FG for the win anyway.

Remember the saints game last week? They had an 8 miute drive to win the game. I think the last 4 plays were:

I think that running out the clock when you are in point blank FG range makes sense if a FG will win the game.
