basketball rule... settle a bet.
Let's say a player has a total mind freeze after halftime and momentarily forgets his team is now shooting at the opposite basket.
He's inbounded the ball and immediately hoists up a jumper at the wrong hoop. His defender sees him pulling up and through sheer instinct puts a hand in his face. The shot goes in and the defender is whistled for a foul while the shooter was in the act of shooting. What happens next? |

Re: basketball rule... settle a bet.
Defense gets two points, foul on defender, guy shootings team gets ball on the side. Its not a field goal attempt if you shoot at the wrong basket.
Also, guy fouling would get credit for the basket. |

Field Goal Attempt
A field goal attempt is a player's attempt to shoot the ball into his basket for a field goal. So this shot into the wrong basket is not considered a field goal attempt. It is my understanding that the basket is credited to the team. |

I think it would be to the closest offensive player.
That's how it's done when a guy trying for a defensive rebound accidentally tips it in. |

Re: basketball rule... settle a bet.
No points. Since the foul was not committed on a shooter attempting a try (by definition), the ball is dead when the foul is committed. It ends up just being a common, non-shooting foul. Shoot one-and-one or two if there are enough team fouls to warrant it.

Re: basketball rule... settle a bet.
While we are on this subject, has anyone ever tried to fool the offensive player into going the wrong way at the beginning of a game, or after halftime?
The reason why I ask, is because I once scored on the wrong basket at the beginning of the game. Part of the reason why is because I was being defended. I think this could work on occasion if you set up to defend the wrong basket intentionally, and the player saw that they had an advantage trying to penetrate to the basket in your direction. |

[/ QUOTE ] When I coached HS JV bball, we'd use this after halftime almost every chance we got. If we had the arrow, we'd break the huddle first, line up three players at the wrong end, and put our PG near the inbounder. All we needed was the defense to wander out next to the players they were assigned to guard (or in a zone, better yet), then inbound to the PG for an uncontested layup. I ditched this when I coached varsity though--didn't seem right, somehow. |

[/ QUOTE ] This is correct. Basket counts. Non-shooting foul. This actually happened in a league I play in two weeks ago. We were up by 2 and inbounding under our basket with like five seconds left. Guy on our team cuts along the baseline, catches the inbound, forgets where he is and tries to score the layup. He misses because guy on the other team (which had to foul) got confused and fouled him pretty hard while he was going up. We got the ball back out of bounds. I've also seen something similar happen as a high school coach. A game I was scouting, not coaching. |
