Default home networking with a wireless modem

My girlfriend gave me a laptop for Christmas and I want to be able to access files and the printer on my desktop. I have a 2wire wireless modem. I set up a wireless network on my desktop and ran the network set up wizard on both the desktop and my laptop. I enabled file sharing on both computers, but I cannot access the other one's files from either computer. I opened the entire network tab and saw the work group I created and it showed that both the desktop and the laptop were on the work group, but when I try to open the icon for my laptop from my desktop it saws I do not have permission to access this network resource. Anybody have any experience with setting up wireless networks using a 2wire modem?
