ultimately win enough money in cash games to invest and live without any financial concern, and then go after fame/glory in the tournament circuit and give back to people less fortunate so that i am of some worth to society. still a selfish goal, but will help others at the same time.

Don't see anything selfish about that, really. Fame leads to great PR, leading to more financial opportunities... So there's more to give away too.
