Default Tossing chips to other players

I've seen this happen from time to time, but last night at AJ's it seemed like it happened every other hand - after the pot was pushed to the winner, he would take a chip and toss it to someone else at the table. One guy even tossed chips to three different people after one pot.

What's up with that?

Not enough info. Was he obviously friends w/ the people he was passin chips to? Or were they involved in that hand w/ him and he sucked out and felt bad so he refunded some of their chips? Maybe he was just wasted. Also it may have started by player A tossing a chip to player B. When player B won his next pot, he tossed it back, etc.

"lucky chip"

That's what I hear them say when they do that.

I see this all the time at Commerce low limits. Usually it happens after a guy wins a big pot. He throws a few chips to the guys he beats, as consolation.

It's called a ping. You agree with one or more players at the table that if you win a pot you'll toss "x" amount to the people your pinging with. 2 people is the most I've pinged with. Playing 10-20 it was $5 per pot.

Sometimes known as pushing (as in pushing one or more chips to another player, from you stack on the table), and against the rules at The Bike (kills jackpots).

Sometimes done by sharper players to the fish they just beat - it's almost as if to say (you're so horrid a player, II want you to stay happy, so here's a lucky chip".

I noticed that people sharply STOPPED pushing a chip my way when they won a pot from me as I became better at the game - but when I was starting, they did it all the time.

when i was playing limit at the commerce a coupla years ago, an asian player told me it was a cultural thing. the winner has the luck with him on this hand. so he tosses one chip from the lucky winning pot across the table to the loser, so next time luck will be with that player.

Just for clarification I have never heard it called a ping on the west coast.

edit to add: They do call it a ping in Tunica.

Neither have I. And, yes, at Commerce it is usually the Asians that partake in the chip tossing.
