I think I\'d be a good DJ. How do I get a gig?
Before I get flamed, let me explain to the purists out there that I'm not looking to create or scratch tracks. I have a good ear for music and a good mic personality so I'm just looking for commerical gigs in dance/house clubs. The genres I'm into are rap, euro trance, 80's pop, and some country. I've got a good collection of songs and albums built. People come to me for suggestions all the time, especially int he rap and trance categories. I also listen to satellite radio in my car, internet radio (shoutcast)at home so I'm exposed to new stuff on a daily basis which gives me an edge.

find a small [censored] bar to DJ in, tell your friends, develop a following, move to bigger bar, rinse repeat until you are doing what you wanted. Im friends with one of the most popular dj's in the us, and thats what he did basically, while going to school for broadcasting/working at a local radio station as a bitch. but "listening to internet radio" as far as giving you an edge is a joke, and leads me to believe you dont really know what you are doing (no offence).

What qualities does a "truly good" commercial DJ possess? Is it just an innate skill of knowing what song will appeal to the most people at the right time? Along with the discipline to keep track of the lastest songs, and charisma to appeal to others, visually and over the mic?

No one wants a DJ that talks, it is lame, whenever a DJ plays a song, you want 80% of the crowd thinking "wow, awesome song, I havent heard this in awhile/this is the new hot track/this will get the party moving/etc".
