Governor's Innaugural Ball- Should I go? What to wear?

OK, trying to keep politics out of it so I posted here. I paid for my wife and I to attend the ball tonight. She's bailing on me because she just taught back to back kickbox classes and basically has more sense than I do regarding these sorts of things.

If I hop in the shower in the next 30 min or so I can still make myself presentable. For reasons that I don't entirely understand, I feel like I *should* go, even if she stays home.

I have a sweet Brooks Bros peaked-lapel tux but I'm not going to do the boots. Also, I will have major difficulty with a self-tie bowtie. I can go with a pre-tied one, or I can go balla long-tie (red or grey-- prob red since its a GOP event) with a pocket square and a vest.

I'd probably post this in the El D forum but I don't rate for it....

Suggestions?

Second option is to just stay home and bag the schmoozing/networking.

You paid to go to this, go network with a hot broad, take pics, show your wife, trip report.

P.S. network with the hot broad can be anything from flirtation to all out sexual favors. Just go with it, and make your wife feel bad for staying home later.

You would probably regret not going. This is a great opportunity. Dress your best and have a great time. Even without a date you could even make a game out the whole thing. Try your best MI6/007 impression and try to follow certain individuals, be creative. Or you could play it straight and use this as a great networking opportunity. Your choice.

OK, actually dressed and ready to head out. Red-tie with pocket square. First time for a pocket square. Looks good. Trip report if anything to report....

Trip Report:

About 4000 people in a room designed for 2000.
Huge lines to the bar and I saw people walking with food from some unknown corner of the room.
No one really there that would give a rats ass whether I was there or not.

Left after 1 glass of champagne and I got a pocket clock door prize.

Still, I did look good with the red tie.
