Earl Weaver and Tommy Lasorda - Something That Has Always Bugged Me
Here are links to their records as managers:
Earl Weaver's Record Tommy Lasorda's Record Perhaps I'm wrong but I think it's fair to say that Weaver has a much better reputation as a manager than Tommy Lasorda. This is true despite the fact that Tommy led teams that won the World Series twice while Weaver led teams won only one time. Lasorda led teams won the league championship 4 times as did Weaver led teams. Weaver's teams have a better winning percentage but of the Weaver led teams with the 3 best records, those teams only won the World Series once. So what bugs me is that Lasorda IMO is looked on as more of a cheerleader than anything else while Weaver is basically looked upon as a managerial genious IMO. Maybe my perception is wrong and when looking at the records most people actually believe that Lasorda and Weaver were at the same level. I don't think my perception is wrong though and I did like Earl Weaver as a manager btw. I just think that Lasorda's record is basically as good or maybe even better thus Lasorda deserves a better reputation. |

Tommy Lasorda turned himself into a joke. [/ QUOTE ] What about their records? Earl Weaver wasn't exactly a model of decorum and civility FWIW either. One might even state that Earl Weaver turned himself into a joke a great deal. |

The problem is now that Lasorda continues to be in the public eye as a salesman. As a kid in the early 90s I didn't even know Lasorda was a manager.

Re: Earl Weaver and Tommy Lasorda - Something That Has Always Bugged M
A buddy of mine is friends with a former MLB pitcher, who pitched for many different teams over a long, long career.
This pitcher doesn't have a bad word to say about anybody--but in Lasorda's case, he'll make an exception. "If you're struggling, the guy will just kill you in the press. But if you pitch a good game, and the reporters gather around you in the locker room afterwards, he steps right in front of you, and acts like he's your best friend. Biggest phony in the world." I had never cared one way or the other about Lasorda, before hearing that. Of course, I'm now quite biased against. |

I hated Lasorda ever since he went Mark Foley on me during a taping of the "Baseball Bunch". Gary Carter was showing me the proper stance for a catcher, and Lasorda comes in behind me...sorry I can't go on.

However, the fact that Lasorda managed until 1996 and Weaver last managed in 1986 allows people to remember Weaver more romantically. Lasorda would seem to be much more likely to be crtiicized by SABR fans. |

[/ QUOTE ] This is a good Weaver quote: [b]"Team speed, for Christ's Sake, you get fu[b]ckin' goddamn little fleas on the fu[b]ckin' bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big co[b]cksuckers who can hit the fuckin' ball out of the ballpark and you can't make any goddamn mistakes." Hear him say it in his own words. Obviously NSFW. |
