Default How many poker chips of each denomination?

If I want to buy poker chips in such a way that I want enough for a game of 7 players, and assume that we will each commit $5 or $10 for the night. (Winner takes all, $35 or $70) How many should I buy in each denomination? What should the blinds be? etc?

It mainly depends on how long you want to play.

IMHO - A good starting stack for a single table tourney is T1000 or T1500 with a blind structure starting at 25/25 and progressively increasing. The time frame of your blinds should not be less than 10 minutes per round. Try 15 minute levels for your first go and see what you think. Try this schedule out and see how you like it. (Everyone will have their own opinion of structures, this is what works for our group).

LEVEL SB BB

1 25 25
2 25 50
3 50 100
4* 100 200
5 150 300
6 200 400
7* 300 600
8 400 800
9 500 1000
10 600 1200
11 800 1600
12 1000 2000

4* Remove 25 chips and Break
7* Remove 50 chips and Break

15 Minute blinds

Tournament Chips
0 x 0 = 0 Red
6 x 25 = 150 Green
3 x 50 = 150 Blue
2 x 100 = 200 Black
1 x 500 = 500 White
1000 TOTAL

As for the number of chips you will need, there are a number of links that have been posted on this site and others, it all depends on your budget and the quality of the chips you are looking for, check these sites out:

Or, just simply type "Poker Chips" in your search browser and look through the thousands of links that will be displayed.

Good Luck!

Are you thinking cash game or tournament?

Either way, I think 8x25, 8x100, and whatever else in higher denom to cover the buyin is a good stack. But I also like to have my stacks at 20 chips so they're easy to set up in racks ahead of time, so I'm biased. Still, this seems to work well and puts enough chips on the table. Sorry, pis, but I wouldn't use a 50 chip between 25 and 100. Used to at one game, finally everyone realized "why the heck are we doing this?" I like a 3-chip game. You don't nead nearly as many of the higher denomination chips, so if you're on a budget, maybe only two stacks each.

If you're doing cash game, then some adjustment. I do $20 buyins and the same 8x8 thing. If it was cash game with 5c/10c blinds, then I dunno, but this should be a starting off point. In the end, as long as you have a handful of each denomination for each player, you'll be able to make change when needed.

For an SnG up to 10 players:

Starting blinds 5/10, starting stack up to 1500.

Chips per player:

5 - 15
25 - 13
100 - 11

So you would need 150 of each. You might want to round off a 500 set with 50 one dollar chips so you can play cash games with $0.05/$0.10 blinds and $5 or $10 buyins.

Summary:

150 fives (reds)
150 twenty-fives (greens)
150 hundreds (blacks)
50 ones (whites)

Pants, I think that is too many chips to start with. From what I've read somewhere around 30 is what most average players like. So I'd say if you can get figure something out so everybody starts w/ 25-32 chips, you're looking good.

I used to start w/ shorter stacks until I realized that my players felt short even when they had the same amount in money, so I expanded it out to a 12 x 25, 12 x 100, 7 x 500 chip start for my T5000 tourneys.

I like having big stacks of chips, so I would lean towards 3 colors. Here is a link to a chip closeout.

I bought some of these and they are good for cheap chips. They are not clay, but are very usable. You can also mix in some of the other crown designs on closeout (reds) to get a playable set.

I find the above somewhat debatable. The tradeoff is you have to make change more often.

However, my starting chips could easily be changed to:

5 - 10
25 - 10
100 - 12

Or if you have a slow blind structure you can go with t1000 starting and use seven 100 chips.

I'll add to the thread although our games are very simplified.

For cash.. we play $20 buy-in .25/.50 PL

whites are .25
reds are $1
blues are $5

we have three standard cases of chips.. if we run out.. we add green as $1 and black as $5. (theres always a zillion whites)

For tourneys, we buy in for 50 chips (all colors worth $1) and blinds are 1/2 until someone busts, then its 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10, etc.

In my group, we play two STT each night. It usually takes about four hours. Sometimes more, sometimes less. We start with T3000, and I give everyone 8/8/4, and start the blinds at 25/50. Blinds are 15 minutes and I use a 75/150 blind level, which many people do not use, as well as 250/500.

I too am about to get some new chips, but I plan on using them for both cash games (.5/1 and 1/2 NL), and Tourneys. Neither would exceed more than 10 players but is there an equation to figure out what denoms I should get if I am getting 600 chips? Usually I play T5000 with 15-20 minute rounds but I can be flexible in order to make it work.
