breaking a fullhouse in 5cd to get more action
I recently held KKK33 on the button early in a 5cd tournament. utg+1 openraises, I 3bet, blinds fold, and utg+1 caps. UTG+1 discards 2 cards, so I assume he's on lower trips. Does it make sense to discard one or two cards here to try to get an extra bet or two? Or should I just stay pat and hope he makes a full house?
On thinking about it, it seems like I'm risking too much for too little. It might work better in bigbet draw. |

I don't know anything about 5cd and I don't even know how I wound up in this thread but I think drawing 2 is your worst option.

Re: breaking a fullhouse in 5cd to get more action
I agree. First off, sounds like you're limit, and if the pots big enough, you're most likely getting called the one more bet to make sure you're really pat.
Only time I would ever break is maybe Aces full vs 1 or 2 people that drew 3 ahead of me. Then, once again, I'd only do that on limit. People love the pat-bluff in big bet, and I still get called down at times HU when I'm pat. If you're OOP, I would never do it.. just imagine the action you'll get when someone makes his A-high flush vs you're obviously 'inferior' pat hand |

Re: breaking a fullhouse in 5cd to get more action
This is pretty much dead on. I've only broken a pat boat
with either aces full or KKKAA and only against one or two opponents that have drawn three. Not all was rosy though: the one time I lost was funny: I limped from the cutoff with pat aces full and was heads up with the BB. He drew three, so naturally I broke and drew one to AAAx and did not improve. The BB bet out and 3-bet my raise and I called to see that he made a straight! [I'll still break aces full or KKKAA heads up against a three card draw.] In PL/NL, I would not think of breaking a pat hand since some players might think you are bluffing. Also, anytime anyone draws less than three cards, you are in some jeopardy of losing, especially against one card draws. If there are any one card draws or two card draws against you, it's better to hope they make a second best hand and lose more chips to you. |

Re: breaking a fullhouse in 5cd to get more action
I've never broken a full house and I think the scenario that bigpooch describes is about the only time to do it. If these are the Stars tourneys that you are talking about, there are enough bozos who think everyone is always bluffing and enough bozos who play every 1 card drawing hand (and even some 2 card draws to straights and flushes) that I'd just keep my boat and hope someone hits their draw or wants to play sheriff and call me down.
