The Progressive Whiskey Thread
Something a little different from the normal whiskey thread...I'll get it started at the bottom of the ladder:
People's Whiskey. You may not all know this specific brand, but you all know the general drink. This is the store brand whiskey you might have drunk in high school or college, or maybe in some dire financial times. It's probably all bottled by the same place - you can usually only buy it by the handle, and the bottle is plastic, but luckily it's only about $9. It's been aged for maybe 12 months, in what the taste would suggest was a half-decomposed pulpwood barrel. It tastes like it might be blended with paint thinner, and it could definitely be gargled in place of Listerine for better oral health. It burns like jet fuel on the way down, and the aftertase is not so much bitter as acidic. The one good thing about it is it still gets you drunk, and how! It's a great whiskey to blackout with, but good luck with that headache in the morning. Okay, someone go ahead and name/describe a slightly better whiskey, and let's see where this goes... |

Does Old Crow count as Whiskey?

Re: The Progressive Whiskey Thread
All,
Let's keep the suggestions to within 25% more expensive than the previous price. Ballpark is fine. |

Re: The Progressive Whiskey Thread
I would be surprised if old crow is 25% more expensive than anything.

Re: The Progressive Whiskey Thread
R&R might be more than 25% higher. I think it is like $7 for a regular size bottle. I used to play golf sometimes with a guy who would bring that in a flask. Not a bad golf course whiskey. Seems approximately as good as some other Canadian stuff. Probably only slightly worse than the unbelievably overrated Crown Royal. Funny, I think the last time I had Crown was when somebody had it in their golf bag.

Re: The Progressive Whiskey Thread
SPR,
Ancient Age at about $8/bottle is pretty bad, but gets the job done. Maybe at the same level as what you mentioned. So, to step it up just a notch from what you and HDPM are drinking. $12/bottle. Old Grand Dad. I had this in college and all I can really remember is that it burns. (and yeah, that horrid Old Crow crap is a bargain indeed at $15.99 for 1.75L!) |

Re: The Progressive Whiskey Thread
There are so many bad bourbons alone...Ten High, Early Times, Evan Williams...the list goes on and on.
Next stop after Old Grandad: Wild Turkey, only $14.99 at BevMo! |

Re: The Progressive Whiskey Thread
Up after that is clearly W. L. Weller. It's $18/bottle, but it's much better than Knob Creek, and on a par with Van Winkle 12 year. This whiskey kinda breaks this thread, since it's really hard to do much better than this one for < 25% more.
