The Well - PokerJans
Totally stolen idea from the Other Poker and O8 forums who I guess stole the idea from SSNL or something.
I don't know how well this thread will go over because I don't know how interesting I am to anyone but I thought I would bring out the idea so hopefully some of our other posters will follow suit after me. Until then... [ QUOTE ] A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except tuesday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer" . The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: Why not on tuesday? and the voice from in the well shouts back: Because on tuesday, its your day in the well. [/ QUOTE ] Its almost midnight here in California - so I guess its my day in the well. |

What limits/games do you play? [/ QUOTE ] When it used to actually matter online during the Party Poker days I would 4-table 3-6 through 15-30 stud8 + O8. And also some MTTs on PS. Mostly 3-6 + 5-10 though. And mostly stud8. Oddly enough also the 10-20 stud8 games usually sucked, but for a period of time during June-Julyish the 15-30 stud8 game on PP was the most amazing game ever. Never made it to 30-60 which also looked amazing and usually had some of the same players from the 15. Also a fair amount of limit HE on Absolute just because their bonii are amazing. These days I am kinda all over the place. Played some 1-2 through 10-20 HORSE when it first came out, some TD. Some NL and I suck really bad at NL. I have a job now and I am about to graduate so poker is very recreational for me these days. Fair amount of live poker @ Foxwoods when I am back at school near Boston and @ Ocean's 11 when I am home in California. Made two Vegas trips this past winter vacation. Whatever looks good...usually 6-12ish. |

I almost never thought the 10/20 was worth playing in on its own, I would only play it just to have an extra table or two while sitting in the fantastic 15/30. Unfortunately I was barely rolled/not rolled for 15/30 at the time, so 30/60 was out of the question. On the rare occassions the 20/40 went it was also very good, but I don't think I played more than a handful of sessions in that game. I'm not really sure how to phrase this into one question, so I guess the best way to put it is "tell me about ante stealing/bringin defense in Stud 8." I've always been a super aggressive stealer last to act as well as from the second and third last to act depending on the upcards in the middle and the opponents holding them, but I recently played a 30 game on Stars in which I was to the left of a player I've always assumed was very strong, and he gave me a walk every single time I was the BI. If the answer changes from a 10/20 structure to a 30/60 structure, what changes are you making? As for defense, I feel like I'm relatively straightforward and generally defend only 3 card hands, but recently I've had a lot of people get to showdown against my steals with hands like AQ3 that they defended with (30/60 type structure), and a few times it has been against people that seemed relatively tight/not horrible, so I've been thinking about that as well. I actually just started playing Ocean's 11 last week, I was very satisfied with the quality of the games I played in. |

[/ QUOTE ] Honestly I havent thought much about this topic. Probably because multi-tabling amazing games on Party I was only concerned about making a quality hand and being paid off. But... First think about stud8 starting hands in general. There are not many situations in stud8 where you are going to be too far behind or ahead on 3rd street. What it really comes down to it 'playing poker' in my opinion. Hand reading are adjusting are paramount. I mean clearly you are going to open up a bit and find yourself in marginal situations. That is just general poker advice though. From a mathmatical perspective however I would just look at how much money is in the pot. 10-20 is 1$*8 + 3$BI = 11$ to steal or calling 7$ into a 21$ pot 30-60 is 5$*8 + 10$BI = 50$ to steal or calling 20$ into an 80$ pot You can make conclusions from those numbers. Its like any poker game though - good players can profitably play more than hands where as bad players can not. So that means if you read hands well and adjust well then steal and defend like A LOT, if you dont, then dont! I played 8-16 at Oceans 11 last week...got smoked. Ive played four sessions there since I turned 21 in Sept...Got smoked for 25BB everytime. LOL - coming from Foxwoods the idea of food service for like no $$ seems awesome also. |

Re: The Well - PokerJans
My live experience with casino stud is extremely limited, just some 1-2 and 3-6 at the Bike, and I was baffled at the tragic play compared to the same (or lower) limits online.
How do other casino stud games compare in general skill level to online play, and is there a correllation between limits (online 3-6 = live 6-12, for example)? I can hold my own in online games up to 10-20 on Stars, FTP and WPX, and I did well in the unspeakably soft 25-50 when it used to run on Pokerroom. What live game limits are comparable in skill to these online games, and what sort of roll (in BB) would I need to play if I took a weekend trip to AC, Foxwoods or Vegas, and which games (location and limits) specifically would you consider good? |

Re: The Well - PokerJans
Any reasons to why you to chose to play Stud8 and/or O8 over a game like NLHE or LHE?

[/ QUOTE ] In my experience, most casino stud, with exception of the East Coast & LV, is a low limit rock garden game. These games usually are the bowels of the stud universe. Casino holdem, on the other hand, at low limits is usually pretty wild. In a 3/6 limit game, you'll have 5-8 seeing the river every hand. It is a mortal sin to fold preflop...The thought process for alot of these donkeys is that "I've came all this way to the casino to gamble. Doesn't matter if it is poker, blackjack, or whatever. So I play every hand." Hence, the name...no foldem, holdem. You can win money in these games, but the variance will make you pull your hair out. I would compare live 3/6 to online .25/.50. OTOH, in my experience, I would compare 5/10 online to 20/40 live. Tighter & more aggressive but you'll find a donkey in there every now & then. But, every site & every casino is different. |

Re: The Well - PokerJans
(All questions regarding stud/8)
Do you use table selection, and at what limits? What adjustments do you make for: - tight games? - short handed games? - tournaments? What are the biggest leaks you see in other people's games? Have you fixed any significant leaks in your own game, and do you think you still have any? Do you use pokertracker, and if so, do you have any interesting stats to share such as VPIP at various limits, BB/hand won with certain hand categories, etc? What is your name on Stars, or is that secret? |

[snarky comment] You have been here for less than a year and have fewer than 100 posts. Why would you want to subject yourself to the well when this is usually done by someone who has been around for a while and known by he others in the forum[/snarky comment]
I'm not saying you don't play well enough to sit in the well, I'm only saying its odd. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |
