Improve your Poker for NL cash games?
Hey all!
As many of you know, I've moved from playing limit Hold'em ring games to NL Hold'em ring games. I already own most of the standard limit Hold'em texts (SSH, TOP, etc.). When I made the move to NL I started collecting and reading the big NL Hold'em texts (HoH 1&2, NLH:T&P, LGB & LBB, PL&NL). Thanks to an early Christmas present I picked up The Complete Course in No-Limit Texas Hold'em by Angel Largay and Russell Fox & Scott T. Harker's Mastering No-Limit Hold'em. I'm reading those now, taking notes as I read and I plan to post detailed reviews when I'm done. Now I happen to know that, under my Festavus Pole, Santa has a B&N gift card with my name on it. I'm thinking that sometime Christmas afternoon I'm going to hop on Barnes & Noble's web site and order some more poker books. The one I really have my eye on is Bob Ciaffone's Improve Your Poker. I've wanted to get this for a while, particularly back when I was a limit specialist. I fully intend to get this one and read it, but I'm not sure how applicable it will be to NL Hold'em. Many NL Hold'em players won't read a poker book unless it is specificly applicable to NL Hold'em, but I think that's short sighted. After all, all the hand examples in Theory of Poker are from forms of limit poker, and ToP is one of the best books out there. All that said, is Improve your Poker likely to help my NL game? Will it help reinforce basic, underlying poker concepts and polish my theoretical understanding of the game? If I read Improve your Poker, will I finally understand No Limit Hold'em, Theory and Practice? I'm not sure what else to get, since I want to get two books. I sort of have my eye on Russell Fox & Scott T. Harker's other book Why You Loose at Poker. Then again, the other day I almost picked up Psychology of Poker. I put it back, because I knew about the gift card under the Festavus Pole. Part of the reason I don't want to pick up either POP or WYLAT is because those are both commonly available in the mega-bookstores. I can pick up either of those any time I've got an extra twenty-odd bucks in my pocket. Same for Mason's Essays. I'd really like to use the card to order something you don't see in stores much - Either a true classic like Improve Your Poker, or a book specific to NL cash games like... I don't know what else. Can someone help a brother out? |

Re: Improve your Poker for NL cash games?
IYP has a wide variety of essays, a good number of which deal with NL holdem, even if NLH is the only game you cared about I would recommend it. It also has valuable info on other games and general poker concepts.

Re: Improve your Poker for NL cash games?
I'm a little over 3/4 through IYP and can't believe I'm just now reading it.
It's a great book worth reading regardless of the type of poker you play. |
