Big Pot with Overcards = Yuck!
Here is a pot I got involved in with a ugly sequence of events. I'm pretty sure I botched this up big time, but I'd like other people's opinions. What do you usually do in spots like this?
Villian is standard TAG. Full Tilt Poker No Limit Holdem Ring game Blinds: $0.25/$0.50 6 players Converter Stack sizes: UTG: $50 UTG+1: $165.25 Hero: $77.05 Button: $174.85 SB: $74.20 BB: $42.80 Pre-flop: (6 players) Hero is CO with T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] T[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] UTG raises to $2, UTG+1 folds, Hero raises to $6, 3 folds, UTG calls. I like to sometimes raise with pairs like jacks and tens against an UTG raise at 6max, but I'm not sure if it's optimal. Flop: 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] ($12.75, 2 players) UTG checks, Hero checks. A bad flop as now a lot of hands beat me (while the ones I beat are unlikely to pay me), but at the time I thought my hand had showdown value, so I elected to check. Thoughts? Turn: 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] ($12.75, 2 players) UTG bets $8, Hero calls. I thought my show of weakness on the flop better much elicited a bet from almost anything, so I thought I had to call this. River: 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] ($28.75, 2 players) UTG checks, Hero??? What to do? I could check and see my showdown, right? But what if he shows me KQ or something and I know I could have blown him off the pot? I know big pots are for big hands, but I'm pretty confused in this spot. My gut feeling is that I should have bet the flop even though it turns my hand into a bluff. |

I understand that it gives worse hands an easy fold, but it also will fold QQ and JJ which are certainly in villain's range. Plus, often villain will fire at us on the turn with worse hands if we check behind on this flop. If we c-bet and get raised, we know we are no good, so we can fold happily. If we c-bet and get called, we are really no worse off than we are when we check. |
