I have trusted strangers for sums of over $2 million regularly. Never have I been let down. In the City (financial London) "my word is my bond".

However, when I was Ops Officer for British forces in Bosnia at the start of the war in 1993, NGOs used to give me bundles of Deutschmarks and ask me to pass them to colleagues in inaccessible parts of the country. I gave them to 20ish year old helicopter pilots to pass on. No receipt, no records; nothing ever went astray, but after one particularly large transaction I had to propose a limit of ~$3 million, because that was the level at which I became tempted, so I thought it was too much to ask of one of my soldier's integrity.
