I really think R.E.M. is at the top of this list, and I'm not trying to be biased (because I like them a lot).

The reason I say this is that when Dominic did his "best songs of the '80s" thread, he totally forgot R.E.M. -- why? Because when you think '80s you don't think REM. They transcend the time period. Likewise, you don't think of them as '90s music or '00s music. They've never sounded like a fad or a trend. They have this weird timeless quality... like, listen to "Gardening At Night" or "Country Feedback" and try to figure out what year -- hell, what decade -- the song was written in. In the way we're still listening to the Beatles, the Stones, and Phil Spector, we'll be listening to R.E.M. late into the 21st century and they will always be fresh and interesting.
