because eggs are larger than sperms. since a male invests only his effectively infinite amount of cheap sperm in a secksytime relationship and the female is stuck prviding all the nutrients and nourishment via her egg, she stands much more to lose if the baby dies (because she will have to do it all over agian to have another).
therefore males, who stand very little to lose since they can just [censored] another female with no investment of any kind, are much more likely to enter into secksytimes and ultimately desert and leave the bitch with the kid, as we have seen in numerous species
