When I played at the old San Remo (a gross place, now Hooters and presumably still gross) the tables didn't have blackjack detectors. Instead, they used a highly advanced peeking technique: the dealer would bend the hole card up slightly and look to see what she had.
Obviously, so long as the dealer is peeking (and not colluding with the players), the lack of a blackjack detector does not change the house edge.

Yes, most of their tables have the no peak, unless they have an ace. If a 10 showing, no peak at all. Doubles/splits returned after the hand if dealer has a BJ though. They have some the readers on tables now.
