If you are a losing player, you will burn through any amount. Set a budget and have fun.

If you are a solid winner, then 20 buy-ins at NL $10 is overly conservative. It's not unreasonable to play with 10 buy-ins.

People keep repeating "20 buy-ins" out of context, both in soft games (even NL $25) where it is too conservative, and in tough games where it is not enough even for an expert. If you hear an expert say, "I think I need 40 buy-ins to play NL $1000," that doesn't mean the expert would need 40 buy-ins to play NL $10, and it doesn't mean you do, either.

It's normal to be up or down 1 (100 BB) buy-in about every 100 hands. In the long run, if you are playing well, then you should be up more frequently than you are down.
